Personality Traits of a Cheating Spouse

Have there been moments in your marriage when you have questioned the fidelity of your husband or wife?  Unfortunately, the number of cheating spouses is on the rise.  You would think that an unhappy husband or wife would simply ask for a divorce to be with the one they love.  However, you need to consider that most spouses do not want to lose the security of their home, possibly due to having children or even possessions.  For that reason, many people who cheat will simply continue cheating rather than ending the marriage.

Interestingly, there are certain personality traits that go along with a cheating spouse.  By understanding these traits, you can pay attention to the men or women you date, avoiding those that fit into the mold of “cheater”.  No, you cannot always be sure but it is possible to increase your chance of finding a faithful spouse.  In this article, we have provided some helpful information so you can have a wonderful, loving, and faithful marriage.

  1. Needing attention from the opposite sex – A person who needs attention and/or approval from the opposite sex is the very type of individual who continues to seek this, even after marriage.  Even if you are an excellent spouse, this personality trait is one of curiosity and insecurity.

  1. Needing excitement – Again, someone who is an adrenalin junkie could also be the same type of person who cheats.  Generally, this type of person needs thrills and excitement to live, which may or may not venture from sports or other activities to marriage.
  1. Interest in bars and clubs – The individual who constantly wants to spend time in the bar or at the club is often open to an affair.  Again, this goes back to the need for excitement and acceptance.

  1. New friends – If someone always feels the need to have new friends, which often means old friends are replaced, this individual is bored.  Unfortunately, this boredom or disinterest can also become a problem in the marriage.
  1. Flirtatious – We all flirt to some degree, which is simply human nature but when a person is openly flirtatious to the point of watching the opposite sex, passing out a phone number, asking for a phone number, winking, and so on, you can be certain an affair in a marriage is likely to happen.

  1. Independence – In this case, if you were to meet someone who is very independent, not wanting or needing your support, input, or guidance, then chances are this person plans on living his or her life the way they want, whether married or not.

Keep in mind that people with these personality traits can change and some do.  However, these traits should serve as red flags, meaning just to pay attention.  It could be that you met this person at a specific time of life when things are a bit more exaggerated but by spending quality time with the individual, you would be able to determine if the person is high risk for having an affair.

If you are already in a marriage with someone who possesses these personality traits, you might consider seeking counseling and always keep your communication line open.  Of course, someone who is independent or loves high thrills is not necessarily a cheater but again, taking that type of personality and coupling it with other traits could be a dangerous combination.
